The Arquebus
The Arquebus was a simple firearm, the predecessor to the musket, using black powder to fire a single lead ball, or bullet. Though out-ranged by the longbow with a much slower rate of fire, competence in the arquebus could be taught to the inexperienced soldier in a matter of weeks, whereas it took an archer years to develop proficiency with the longbow.
